The Verinote mail server uses Spam Assassin, the world's No.1 open-source anti-spam tool.
Spam Assassin (SA) is integrated with the mail server software, and scans every incoming message, assigning each a score based on content, origin etc.
We have pre-configured SA to use a score of 5 points or more as the cut-off for positively tagging messages as spam.
When SA identifies a message as spam, the body of the message is replaced by the text :
“Spam detection software, running on the system 'ds.verinote-uk.net', has identified this incoming email as possible spam. The original message has been attached to this so you can view it (if it isn't spam) or label similar future email. If you have any questions, see the administrator of that system for details”
You have three options for dealing with these tagged messages:
1. Create a mail rule in Outlook (or your mail client) to look for the text :
“Spam detection software”
in the body of the message and move it to a local spam folder, delete it, whatever.
2. Turn on the [Spam Box] feature. This diverts all these messages to a special folder on the server called [Spam].
You can read more about the options, and configure the Spam Box by logging in to your cPanel (http://www.yourdomain.com/cpanel)
(replacing yourdomain.com with your real domain name).
From the [mail] panel, click [Spam Assassin].![]()
From the SA configuration screen, you can enable or disable SA and the Spam Box, change the threshold score, change the default delivery mode (deliver to the spam box or just delete the incoming messages) and empty the spam box.
If you prefer to scan through the spam messages looking for false positives, you have two options:
A - login to your webmail panel at http://www.yourdomain.com/webmail and choose either [Horde] or [Squirrel Mail]. In your mail folders, you'll see a folder named 'spam' which you can browse and select/delete all messages if required.
B - Instead of collecting your email using POP (which downloads all messages on the server to your local PC), consider using the IMAP protocol.
IMAP displays your mail folders on the server, including the Spam folder, and lets you manage the messages remotely, downloading a local copy of the message when required. If you read your email from more than one PC, IMAP is a good way of managing your messages. To set up an IMAP account in Outlook, you have to create a new account and choose [IMAP] rather than POP for the incoming mail server. The outgoing mail server remains the same.
3. Turn on the [Box Trapper]
feature.
This is even more effective than the Spam Box and should generally be used only if you are being spammed to death.
It forces senders to add themselves to your personal whitelist before you can receive their mail.
This can be viewed as an inconvenience by the senders, but is 100% effective at blocking spam.
The Box Trapper is enabled through the [Mail Manager Menu] as described above.
